The use of black and white and the musical appeal to such classic source material illustrates the creative team’s obvious verisimilitude with the source material, but the inclusion of modern humor—such as a Dracula who orders pizza, but makes sure there is no garlic, and pays with a coupon—updates the material and grounds their appeal to classic horror conventions within their own created universe. Kripke’s team is consistently excellent at this acknowledgement of their generic heritage while still poking fun at the conventions and their own employment of them.
